ROBINSON RESERVE

Public BBQ

Robinson Reserve occupies a fascinating slice of Coburg's military heritage, where the old drill hall once stood from 1913 to 1987. The centerpiece isn't just the impressive playground equipment - though the towering slides and bird's nest swings certainly command attention - but rather the remarkable WW2 Japanese anti-aircraft gun and naval rangefinder that stand sentinel over family picnics. It's an oddly compelling juxtaposition: children scrambling over monkey bars while parents contemplate the weight of history beside them. The barbecue facilities are well-maintained, and the council has thoughtfully provided toilets open during daylight hours, plus drinking fountains for both humans and dogs. The off-leash area extends 15 metres from the playground, though one does occasionally witness the eternal battle between responsible dog owners and those who apparently believe their pet's offerings are gifts to the community. The large central tree provides welcome shade for picnickers, while the playground itself seems designed for older children - toddlers might find it more challenging than entertaining.
